Wanderlust Chronicles: Discover Some Lesser Explored Gems Around The Globe

In a world that seems so interconnected and accessible, it’s easy to assume that every corner of the globe has been discovered and explored. However, for the true wanderlust enthusiast, the thrill lies in unearthing hidden gems and venturing into relatively uncharted territories.

Let me take you on a little journey to some of the most unexplored and captivating destinations around the world. Get ready to add them to your bucket list. Now, where did I leave my passport…

Eastern Highlands, Zimbabwe

While Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe tops many bucket lists, there is much more to this southern African country to explore. Giving off Scottish Highland vibes, the Eastern Highlands stretch 300 kilometres along the Mozambique border and are an explorers’ paradise.

While high-octane activities such as white water rafting are available, things take a slower pace in the coolness of the mountains, with golf, fishing and horse riding some favoured activities. The Bvumba Mountains offer calm lakes and stunning mountains for Instagram-worthy backdrops on relaxing picnics or gentle strolls. Those wishing to up the activity levels can hike the spikes of the Chimanimani Mountains.

With delightful botanical gardens, some of the country’s best food, and wildlife galore, this region offers a great escape for anyone wanting to enjoy Africa at its finest.

Bhutan

Nestled in the Himalayas, the Kingdom of Bhutan is known for its breathtaking landscapes, vibrant culture, and strong commitment to sustainability. With limited tourist visas issued and strict regulations, Bhutan remains untouched by excessive commercialisation.

Every corner exudes natural beauty and tranquillity, from the picturesque Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest) monastery to the remote Haa Valley. With amazing trails to explore, pulling on your boots and climbing here is a must for all hiking enthusiasts.

If you are less into strenuous activity like me, the country still offers a fantastic time. With the blend of cultures from the surrounding countries, the area’s food, music, art and dance are unique.

Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

Often described as the world’s largest mirror, the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia is a surreal and captivating destination. This expansive 10,000 square kilometre salt flat creates a stunning reflective surface during the December to February rainy season

The landscape of otherworldly beauty, dotted with cacti-covered islands, is a photographer’s dream. Being one of Bolivia’s most remote areas, visiting the Salar de Uyuni guarantees an off-the-beaten-path experience.

Combine visiting the area with a stay in La Paz. Not only will this allow you time to absorb the country’s culture, but it will also help you adjust to the altitude and prevent the journey to the salt flats from making you sick!

Faroe Islands, Denmark

The Faroe Islands offer a dramatic and untouched landscape in the North Atlantic Ocean between Scotland and Iceland. This Danish archipelago showcases nature at its best with its rugged cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and vibrant grass-roofed villages.

With their limited population and pristine nature, they provide an idyllic escape for those seeking solitude and natural beauty. Visiting the islands allows you to breathe clean air and rejuvenate in a stunning environment.

From hiking to the Lake of Sørvágsvatn, which seems to hang over the sea, exploring the fantastic fjords or staring in awe at the double-drop waterfall at Fossá, those who enjoy being outdoors will fall in love with the beauty of the Islands. If you visit between November and February, you might just catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights

Monaghan Town, Ireland

When people ask where I am from, I almost always preface my answer with, “You have probably never heard of it…”. And they rarely have. Hidden amongst drumlins and lakes, Monaghan is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. Approximately an hour north of Dublin and a similar distance south of Belfast, this Irish town offers an abundance of tranquillity, history and culture.

Home to Ireland’s most visited park, Rossmore Forest Park, Monaghan is a great base for exploring the region. The stunning Cathedral (overlooking the town) and Gothic-style St Patrick’s Church (said to have inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula) combined with the Neoclassical Courthouse and the rounded corners of many buildings invoke a unique charm. Fantastic restaurants, pubs with live music and the friendliness of the people add to the welcome that awaits.

Visit the award-winning County Museum, satisfy your inner adrenaline junkie at the Rally School of Ireland or explore the history of the Castle Leslie Estate. Learn about the famous lace-making in either Clones or Carrickmacross, taste the local beer at the Brehon Brewhouse or get inspiration from our renowned poet, Patrick Kavanagh, as you meander through the lake-dotted countryside of the county.

I may be a little biassed, but a trip to Monaghan should be high on anyone’s bucket list!

I hope these unexplored treasures remind you that the allure of wanderlust lies in discovering the lesser-known corners of our planet. So, embrace your adventurous spirit and go explore these somewhat uncharted territories!
